Philadelphia Food Day Events

We will begin with a hands-on tour (~1/2 hour) featuring many aspects of urban farming including growing practices, composting, green building, bees, and more! We will then engage participants in farm work to help support our mission.

Visitors to the Mill at Anselma can learn how apples were turned into that traditional Pennsylvania drink, apple cider. Children will enjoy turning the handles of the antique cider press, and samples of hot apple cider and delicious baked goods will be available. The historic Mill building, built in 1747 to mill flour for local residents, will be running all day for tours.

Visitors will learn about the ancient art of brewing beer. Foodways historian Clarissa Dillon will demonstrate the finer points of brewing from wheat and barley, and discuss the other beverage options - both alcoholic and non-alcoholic - available to the Early Americans. The historic Mill will be open all day for tours.

The Garden to Plate (G2P) cooking class will demonstrate how to cook fresh produce grown on a community garden to youth ages 11-18. The class will be held at our conference center space next door to the garden. In addition to cooking we will also discuss the importance of eating nutritious food. G2P is health and wellness program that began in October 2010. Class topics also focused on food and environmental justice, economic justice and the prison industrial complex.

Food Day at the Chester County Food Bank will feature, displays by our partnering farms, schools, food providers, and community and government organizations. Cooking demos, interactive games for children, a tour and demonstration of our commercial vegetable processing facility, as well as the dedication of our facility are all planned.

Join us at The Schuylkill Center’s Education Farm to learn about our Farm Education program and the ways that we are integrating environmental science and agriculture. Hike through the forest to our farm to meet our farmers and educators. Taste, pick and explore - even pitch in with some farm chores. Hands on activities provided for children and adults. All ages welcome.

The PUFFA Youth Wellness Advocates invite the YOU(th)and adults of Philadelphia to see the short films they created as part of their 'Step Up and Speak Out' campaign to encourage you to make healthy food and lifestyle choices. These creative films were made possible by a partnership with WHYY. Films from other youth groups along with the trailer from the movie DIVE will also be screened. Light refreshments will be served. Cost is free. Clef Club is located 2 blocks south of the Broad Street Line- South Street Stop.

HPC will also distribute fresh apples, recipes, and educational information about healthy eating at sites where it conducts nutrition education for adults through its Nutrition for Life programming, which is part of the Pennsylvania Nutrition Education TRACKS program and SNAP-Ed.

HPC will conduct school-wide taste tests of fresh apples at each of the five parochial schools where it provides nutrition education through its Nutrition for Life program during the two weeks surrounding Food Day. Classroom teachers will receive corresponding materials to provide a lesson about healthy eating in conjunction with the taste-test.
