The much-anticipated completion of Reading Terminal Market’s Avenue D renovations, the $3.4 million expansion supporting and upgrading new vendor space, restrooms, demo kitchen and special events space, are finally ready to be unveiled and celebrated with the public beginning Monday, June 18.
For the entire week, the market will host multiple daily events dedicated to showing off its new bells and whistles with special guests, cooking demos, lectures and tastings held at La Cucina, the upgraded demo kitchen, as well as the market’s new Rick Nichols Room named after The Inquirer’s former columnist who left his post just last year after covering the region’s food scene for 15 years.
The following food-studded list is free and opened to the public with most events taking place at noon and 5 p.m.
Monday, June 18: Mayor Michael Nutter will kick off the celebrations with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m., followed by Philadelphia is for Chocolate Lovers hosted by chocolate expert Michael Holahan, owner of Pennsylvania General Store, and Bill Beck of Beck’s Cajun Cafe during Philly Meets the Bayou as he prepares his six-foot award winning sandwich, Train Wreck, at noon. Then at 5 p.m. expect an appearance from local restaurateur and caterer Steve Poses of At Home cookbook and website, promoting the importance of human connection through home entertaining.
Tuesday, June 19: Sal Vetri, father of Philadelphia’s celebrated chef Marc Vetri, will join Brad Spence of Amis Restaurant for Cooking with Sal at noon, a demo that’s not to be missed. Guests, including Judy Wicks of White Dog Cafe, will lead How the Local Food Movement Got its Start later in the afternoon.
Wednesday, June 20: Longtime family owned vendors of the market, Bassetts Ice Cream, and the Berley Brothers of Franklin Fountain and Shane Confectionary showcase Dipping into Philly’s Ice Cream Roots at noon, followed by local food bloggers, including Michael Klein the Philly Insider and Claire Batten of phillyfoodlovers.com, taking the floor at 5 p.m.
Thursday, June 21: Eran Wajswol of the market’s new Valley Shepherd Creamery spices up the market with What a Friend We Have in Cheeses, later to be entertained by a demo from Wendy Born and James Barrett of Metropolitan Bakery at 5 p.m. with Making Serious Dough.
Friday, June 22: Come out to see owner Ellen Yin and chef Terence Feury of Fork Restaurant getting busy in the demo kitchen with Seafood Made Easy. Then at 5 p.m., Doug Hager and Jeremy Nolen of South Street’s Brauhaus Schmitz and Reading Terminal Market’s new Wursthaus Schmitz display what they do best in Made in Germany.
Saturday, June 23: Artisan pasta maker Aliza Green and Anna Florio of the market’s test kitchen, La Cucina, host From the Market Aisles to Your Plate beginning at noon.
In addition, some of the newest vendors to set up shop at Reading Terminal Market include The Head Nut offering herbs, spices, coffees and teas; The Tubby Olive featuring fine and fresh olive oils and balsamic vinegars; Valley Shepherd Creamery specializing in on-the-spot house-made cheeses and dairy products from their farm in Long Valley, NJ; and Wursthaus Schmitz, the second location from owners of Brauhaus Schmitz featuring their popular German specialties.
While exploring, be sure to check out the upgraded, expanded and relocated locations for DiNic’s, Spataro’s Cheesesteaks and Flying Monkey Bakery.
Parking at the 12th and Filbert Street garage is offered up two hours at $4 for visitors with a $10 purchase and validation from any merchant.
