The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) will be celebrating all things fall, with a free family-friendly, multi-sensory experience perfect for green thumbs and garden newbies alike.
The event features a day’s worth of garden fun, from contests (homemade salsa, edible arrangements) to presentations from local floral and plant experts, and a PHS Gold Medal award-winning plants display.
Some highlights, below:
Visitors can shop at the Festival Marketplace for plants, produce, tools, garden accessories, home décor, fine crafts and keepsakes from the PHS/Philadelphia International Flower Show collections. Full vendor list here (PDF).
You can also fill your shopping bags at the Meadowbrook “pop-up” store for unusual varieties of succulents and tropical indoor plants, and a colorful selection of cabbages, kale, peppers, pansies and plants for fall.
New this year are two friendly competitions to showcase your talents. Is your garden bounty or homemade salsa worthy of a PHS blue ribbon? Click here to read the guidelines for entering (PDF). Entries for both contests will be accepted from 7:30-10 a.m. the day of the festival t the “Harvest Bounty” tent.
Kids can create a crafty creature, or a plant press for preserving flowers and leaves from their gardens. Youngsters will also match wits in the Veggie Races garden games and compete in sack races and an obstacle course. There will be presentations for kids on bugs, bees and other garden-related topics.
Gardeners can recycle their nursery containers and horticultural plastics at the “Green Stop,” and everyone can enjoy double-decker bus tours of the Navy Yard. Enjoy live music from Prose from Dover (10 a.m.-noon), The Turnips: (noon-2 p.m.) and Victoria Spaeth and the Spaeth Cadets (2-4 p.m.). Bring the pets along, too; there will be a play zone for pets sponsored by Subaru.
What’s a festival without a beer garden? From noon-4 p.m. the PHS Young Friends will offer refreshments and a relaxing place to hang out at the first-ever Fall Festival Biergarten. Enjoy cool drinks from Yards Brewing Company and play classic lawn games.
Bonus: anyone who joins PHS that day will receive free tickets to the 2012 Philadelphia International Flower Show, “Hawaii: Islands of Aloha,” a free plant and year-round benefits.
