Philadelphia Brewing Company

Carrying on the Kensington tradition of good, local brews

R. Kennedy for GPTMC

Located in a Kensington warehouse long known for its brewing roots, Philadelphia Brewing Company produces some of the city’s favorite microbrews. In fact, a Philadelphia bar without a PBC brew on tap is a rare find, indeed.

And for good reason. PBC’s four hand-crafted ales — the Kenzinger, Newbold IPA, Rowhouse Red and the ever-popular Walt Wit — are commendable for both their imaginative tastes and their homages to Philadelphia.

The Walt Wit, for instance, is a two-part salute to former resident Walt Whitman and “Whiz wit,” every Philadelphian’s favorite way to order a cheesesteak. As for taste? A pinch of spice and a whisper of citrus lend complexity to this fragrant, satisfying ale, making it a true Philadelphia favorite.

You can visit the Brewery on Saturdays from 12 until 3 p.m. for a guided tour and a few sudsy sips. Can’t make it? Just pull up a stool at just about any Philadelphia bar and ask your friendly barkeep for a classic Kenzinger on draft. Bottoms up!
