La Colombe Torrefaction

A Philadelphia roaster with a European vibe

G. Widman for GPTMC

In the 1980s, an American (Todd Carmichael) and a Frenchman (Jean-Philippe Iberti) met in Seattle, and bonded over their shared interest in the art of traditional European coffee roasting. When it came time to start their own company in 1994, they chose Philadelphia as a home base and created five flagship blends.

Word of La Colombe’s rich roasts spread, drawing throngs of visitors to its two Philadelphia locations and attracting a legion of chefs at fine dining restaurants around the nation.

Most recently, La Colombe has opened two locations in New York and expanded its wholesale business, but it remains a Philly-centric company. La Colombe beans can be purchased at either storefront or at select markets in the region, including Whole Foods.
