It’s National Food Day Today, Celebrate Philadelphia Style

We’ve been talking about it for weeks, and today’s National Food Day, although we’ve been celebrating here in Philadelphia since October 15th!

National Food Day, an initiative of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, launched nationally today with a series of events across the country. Food Day is designed to raise awareness for the importance of healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way.

Last week we posted some of the events we were/are looking most forward to, and our friends at uwishunu did the same. Be sure to check out the full calendar of Philadelphia events, which run through this Saturday, October 29th.

However, attending a local event isn’t all you can do – here are a few suggestions on how to celebrate on your own terms:

• Cook a locally sourced meal for your family? Or, plant fall bulbs like garlic that will provide you with a great return on your investment come spring;
• Do all of your grocery shopping at a local farmers market;
• Volunteer at a local food pantry or soup kitchen and provide nourishment to Philadelphia’s most vulnerable
