This past Saturday, eight food trucks from around the city drove their vehicles onto the grounds of The Piazza at Schmidts for the first annual Philadelphia Vendy Awards. The participating vendors, which included Cucina Zapata, Guapos Tacos, King of Falafel, La Copine, Magic Carpet Foods, Sugar Philly, Sweet Box and Gigi and Big R Caribbean/American Soul Food, were there to compete for the honor of being deemed the best street food in the city.

More than 600 people filled The Piazza at Schmidts to eat, drink and cast their votes for the Peoples’ Choice Award. Winner of the Vendy Cup were chosen by a panel of highly esteemed judges: Mayor Nutter, Chef Jennifer Carroll, food writer Drew Lazor, food and music editor Brian McManus, Chef Michael Solomonov, wife of Phillies pitcher Brad, Lindsay Lidge, and Midtown Lunch Philadelphia editor Jamie Shanker.

The best dessert prize went to Sweet Box. Peoples’ Choice was Cucina Zapata (their short rib taco was one of the best things I ate all day) and Gigi and Big R’s took home the Vendy Cup. Proceeds from the event benefitted The Food Trust.

It was a hugely successful day. We’re already looking forward to next year!
