Recently opened in South Philly’s Pennsport neighborhood is new local favorite, Federal Donuts. This mecca of fried and sugary goodness is brought to us courtesy of local food all-star lineup: Chefs Steven Cook and Michael Solomanov of Zahav and Percy Street fame, Thomas Henneman and Bob Logue of Bodhi Coffee and Philly area food-and-drink aficionado, Felicia D’Ambrosio.
Fitted in a quaint corner store locale, Federal Donuts is a take-out shop specializing in unique renditions of American classics: doughnuts and fried chicken. Federal offers two styles of doughnuts: “Fresh” (traditional) and “Fancy”. The fried chicken is also served two ways: traditional “Crunchy” and Korean-style “Glazed” chicken.
Fried chicken crowd pleasers include the Glazed Honey-Ginger and the Crunchy Za’atar–fried chicken sprinkled with a tasty Middle Eastern herb and spice blend. “Fancy” doughnuts to try include Coconut-Pineapple and Key Lime with graham cracker streusel. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, be sure to try the Nutella-Tehina-Pomegranate doughnut.
Doughnuts begin selling at 7am and are available until they sell out–sometimes as early as 11am! Fried chicken orders begin at 11:45am and typically sell out by 1pm. Chickens are available in half & full sizes and doughnuts are for sale individually and by the full & half dozens. You best arrive early to get lucky; Federal’s lip-smacking treats are worth planning for to experience!
