October is Co-Op Month! If you haven’t heard of, or participated in, a Philadelphia area food co-op, there’s no time like the present!
Food co-ops are local, member-owned grocery stores that provide healthy, organic and sustainably grown foods to the community. Owned and managed by their members, co-ops allow you to know more about the food you eat, help support your local economy and respect the environment with sustainable business practices.
Unlike CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) where you buy a share of the seasons’ harvest, at a co-op, you pay a membership fee (in full or over time) which allows you to shop at the co-op as you would at a regular grocery store. Generally, co-op’s only allow members to shop at their store (although, Weaver’s Way in Northwest Philadelphia doesn’t require membership to shop).
For more information about food cooperatives, check out the newly-formed Mid-Atlantic Food Co-op Alliance, which is comprised of over 30 different food cooperatives in Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Below is a list of co-ops currently open in the Philadelphia area, along with a list of those in development.
