Art in the Age

An artist collective turns into the producers of organic, small-batch spirits

An artist collective with an historical sensibility, Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction has also become one of Philadelphia’s premier spirt designers. They re-imagining vintage flavors and have them made into palate-pleasing tipples by an organic, small-batch distillery.

Root is a pre-temperance, Native American-style root tea (the precursor to root beer) made from organic sugar cane with spicy notes of sassafras essence, sarsaprilla and birch bark. Snap takes its inspiration from Pennsylvania Dutch lebkuchen, or ginger snaps, and has a sweet, tangy, buttery flavor with a hint of molasses.

With their botanical ingredients and simple, almost medicinal packaging, both Root and Snap hearken to earlier times and emphasize natural flavors. Answering a growing demand for old-fashioned cocktails and spirits, Art in the Age has already filled an important niche behind local bars of distinction like Noble, APO and Supper. Root and Snap are available at select Pennsylvania state stores.
